Society and local communities
As a quality retailer of alcoholic drinks, J D Wetherspoon acts in a highly responsible manner. With this in mind, we have developed close partnerships with local authorities and police, working with them to build crime-fighting schemes, such as Pubwatch, while encouraging staff to progress with local initiatives on issues ranging from underage drinking to drug-rape awareness.
We have developed a ‘Responsible Alcohol Retailing Policy’ which explains our approach and the reasons behind our decisions.
Our community involvement varies a great deal: there are the many and various sports teams which we sponsor or support; the paintings and sculptures which we commission from local artists or even schoolchildren, whose art adorns the walls of our Wetherspoon lodges.
Wherever possible, pub names are chosen to reflect local history, along with local history panels in all pubs, explaining the development of local industry, including relevant memorabilia and historic items and photographs displayed inside.
Wetherspoon has consistently won design awards for all aspects of design.
Access is a priority for us, and our efforts to bring a top-quality service to those with disabilities have been recognised by charities, local agencies and national government. All pubs are monitored annually for their accessibility. We work continuously with the Employers’ Forum on Disability to improve employment, service and access in all of our pubs.
Currently, we sponsor an ever-growing number of local sports teams, through monetary contributions for kit or equipment. Teams are from the world of rugby, football, cricket and netball.
All of our pubs are committed to being a member of the local Pubwatch scheme; where a scheme is not currently running, we work with the local police to set one up. We also work closely with local suppliers and support local businesses, where possible, actively supporting local breweries, whatever their size. Indeed, we are widely regarded as one of the industry’s largest supporters of microbreweries – many of which regularly hold ‘meet the brewer’ events and mini beer festivals, in our pubs.

Team spirit
Currently, we sponsor around 30 local sports teams, through monetary contributions for kit or equipment. Teams are from the world of rugby, football and netball: we proudly support the University of Portsmouth’s women’s football team, The Robert Shaw netball team in Bolton and Derecharra United in Enniskillen.
Pubwatch
Our commitment to Pubwatches is exemplified by David Routledge, one of our pub managers from Washington, Tyne & Wear. David recognised the need for a pubwatch in his area; to date, he has recruited over 25 pubs into the scheme.
