Charities

The social and convivial atmosphere in our pubs lends itself perfectly to charitable initiatives, ensuring that helping others can be both fun and rewarding.

Our staff and customers need little encouragement to link arms and come up with creative fund-raising ideas which will help us, as a company, to reach our pledged target of £2 million for our chosen charity –
CLIC Sargent (Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood); so far, we have raised a total of £2,000,000.00

It’s about more than money – local events and activities encourage real community spirit.

This is an area in which our corporate size can make a genuine difference at local level.

As well as organising hundreds of local events annually, our fund-raising efforts include a national five-a-side football tournament – Kick for CLIC. Each year, for the past few years, around 250 Wetherspoon teams have taken part in the event and raise an impressive total of over £150,000 for children with cancer.

We are also considering funding secondment positions to work on local projects and overseas.

About CLIC Sargent

CLIC was established in 1976 as a local charity in the southwest of England. It is now the UK’s leading children’s cancer charity and specialises in three areas of activity: medical resources, practical help and research.

CLIC and Sargent Cancer Care for Children merged in January 2005 to become the UK’s leading children’s cancer charity. Both have a rich history of excellent care and support. Together, CLIC Sargent is both stronger and more effective, providing support for more children and young people with cancer – and their families.

The charity currently operates eight Homes from Homes, providing free, self-catered accommodation for children and their families, close to regional paediatric oncology units. The charity also funds paediatric nurses and play specialists, providing care grants to help with the financial pressures of caring for a sick child.

At any one time in the UK, 3,000 children are undergoing treatment for cancer and leukaemia. Five cases are diagnosed daily. Improvements in treatment and professional support mean that seven out of ten children survive childhood cancer and leukaemia. CLIC Sargent wants to help to provide practical support to children suffering from these diseases – and to their families.

Putting the fun in fund-raising

From auctions to all-body waxes, fashion shows to footballs; from head shaves to half marathons, our pubs dream up and participate in hundreds of events every year. Every pub is also encouraged to support a local charity. The company makes further donations via a charity committee to local good causes, including donations, sponsorships, raffle prizes, computers for schools and unwanted furniture for local institutions.
