Edinburgh Airport began life, in 1915, as Turnhouse Aerodrome, taking its name from its location a little west of the capital city. It was called Turnhouse for more than 60 years, until the airfield was redeveloped and officially opened as Edinburgh Airport, in 1977.
Edinburgh's history is rich and varied, and the city has produced several famous historical figures, including the writers Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson and the inventor Alexander Graham Bell. The airport site is home to a scheduled ancient monument, The Cat Stane, a four-foot-high standing stone, dating from either the 5th or 6th centuries.
