This Wetherspoon pub bears the name of the man who started as a ditch digger and became an inventor and manufacturer of scientific instruments. Stanley's factory, in Norwood, still stands, and his own house is a children's home, as he intended. He was also the founder of Stanley Halls and Technical School in South Norwood.
