* We are pleased to announce that The Shrewsbury Hotel will be open on Christmas Eve this year. Please note that breakfasts will not be available.
An inn called The Welsh Harp is thought to have stood on this site in the 17th century. By 1820, it had become The Britannia, and in the 1960s it changed its name, for the last time, to The Shrewsbury Hotel.
In 1685, the site of The Welsh Harp is recorded as Mardol, now Bridge Place. The Welsh Harp is mentioned again, in 1786 and 1804, as the starting point or 'stage waggons for Welshpool'. By 1820, The Welsh Harp had become The Britannia, and later a meeting place for the 'Gullet Club' for prominent townsmen. In the 1960s, the pub became known as The Shrewsbury Hotel.
We show live subtitled news (on silent) throughout the day.
