The pub is named after the man who is recognised as the founder of Airdrie.
The Hamilton family have been connected with Airdrie for centuries. John Hamilton was killed at Flodden Field in 1513 (in the crushing defeat by the English army). The transformation of Airdrie, from a 'fermtoun' to a planned village, was initiated by Robert Hamilton. He also promoted the 1695 Act of Parliament which established the Airdrie Fairs.
