For centuries, salmon fishing was Berwick's most important commercial activity, with up to 700 fish caught in a single day.

From 1788, the use of ice changed the industry, and, with the arrival of the railways in the early 19th century, salmon could be sent all over the country. Gone are the days when 700 fish could be caught in a single day.
