Pub History

The coronation of Edgar, King of Wessex, the first king of all England, was held in the abbey which was specially built for the occasion, and stood on the site of the present Bath Abbey.

Built in the perpendicular style, Bath Abbey stands on the site of a Saxon monastery. The abbey was later replaced by a Norman cathedral priory, which dominated the city. However, the priory fell into decay and, by 1499, stood in ruins.
