Lancaster has grown up by the River Lune, navigable as far as Skerton Bridge. The area alongside the Lune has long been known as Green Ayre, land created by the river since Roman times.
Maps and records show that, four centuries ago, Green Ayre was low lying, not built on and surrounded by a mill race, which flowed where Parliament Street, North Road and Damside Street are today.
