This Wetherspoon pub was originally part of the Golden Acorn Hotel. It was renamed The Albany, 20 years later, in keeping with the newly adopted heraldic theme. The Albany Herald is one of the officers of the Court of the Lord Lyon, King of Arms, which controls the granting of arms in Scotland.
Most of the first phase of the town centre, including the Golden Acorn Hotel, was completed and occupied during 1963, and formally opened on 2 December 1964. For several years the hotel became the hub of the town's social life. The second phase included the 'Kingdom Centre', which was opened in 1976. Phase II of the town centre opened in 1982. At the end of 1983, the Golden Acorn was given a facelift by new owners, Stakis, and became The Albany, which includes this Wetherspoon pub. Phase IV germinated slowly in the late 1980s.
