Pub History

This pub takes its name from the sketch written by Ronnie Barker for the television show The Two Ronnies, in which he starred alongside Ronnie Corbett. In the sketch, Barker walks into a hardware store and asks for 'four candles'. Corbett gives him the candles, but Barker had really wanted 'fork handles' - “andles for forks”.

The nearby history faculty of Oxford University was built in 1881 as the City's High School for Boys, occupying this impressive building for more than 80 years. The school's former pupils include the actor, writer and comedian Ronnie Barker (1929-2005).
