John Speed's plan of Northampton, drawn in 1610, records an unidentified building or structure on what is now the site of the Lloyds No.1 Bar, which is located close to the East Gate and the town wall.
The East Gate was the fairest of all the gates, large and high, embellished with shields of arms and other ornaments of stonework. Northampton castle and the town walls were destroyed on the orders of King Charles II, in the 1660s.
