Birmingham International Airport began life as Elmdon Airport. The first aircraft to land at Elmdon was a Western Airways DH.90 Dragonfly, on 20 March 1939.
The airport began commercial operations on 1 May, although only 215 of the 800 acres were in use. The official opening followed in July, performed by the Duchess of Kent, on a very wet Saturday. The prime minister, Neville Chamberlain, also attended.
We show live subtitled news (on silent) throughout the day.
