This pub is situated on Hurst Street, forming part of Birmingham's Chinese quarter and taking its name from the highly popular dragon dance, a traditional Chinese dance, performed on special occasions, particularly during Chinese new year. Dragons are an important part of Chinese culture, symbolising good fortune.
Chinese people began settling in Birmingham in the early 20th century, as the city had well-established trade links with China and the Far East by that time. By the 1970s, several Chinese businesses were located in the Hurst Street area, which developed into the Chinese quarter. The Arcadian Centre is at the heart of Chinatown, the focal point for the annual Chinese new year celebrations.
