The site of this Wetherspoon pub was once part of the gardens immediately behind the long-demolished Babbington House. This 17th-century mansion was the home of the Babbington family, whose coat of arms depicted two baboons on a large beer or wine cask.
It was built in the mid 17th century by Henry Mellor, who sold it to Robert Wilmot of Chaddesden in the 1680s. Through marriage, Wilmot's son, Edward, became part of the Sitwell family.
