Wetherspoon has scooped a prestigious national award for its overall commitment to responsible retailing and its focus on value and quality for its customers.
Wetherspoon has been named as Pub Company of the Year – Managed (100+ outlets), in The Publican Awards 2010.
The prestigious awards highlight the pub industry’s star performers. Wetherspoon was chosen as the winner in its sector, following a rigorous inspection by a group of judges.
The judges stated: “2009 vindicated Wetherspoon’s strategy, with initiatives to drive sales in food and drink which did not detract from its commitment to responsible retailing or its focus on value and quality for its customers.”
They also highlighted the company’s financial record, its training programme, which one judge described as “way above the industry standard”, and its responsible retailing strategy, including its commitment to Best Bar None.
The judges pointed out that Wetherspoon had “spent the past three decades, since it was founded in 1979, bucking trends, winning friends and, as far as some are concerned, taking the pub game by the scruff of the neck and giving it a darn good shake”.
They also highlighted the fact that Wetherspoon has year-on-year increased sales and profits and kept up a pub roll-out programme which “appears to thumb a nose in the current downturn in the industry’s overall fortunes”.
Wetherspoon’s chief executive, John Hutson, said: “It is fantastic to win the award and due to the hard work of all of our staff at our pubs across the UK and those at head office.
“In the past year, we have distinguished ourselves from other pubs and pub operators, more than at any time in the previous few years. We believe that it is due to a combination of our operating practices and an ability to achieve a high level of consistency in delivering great service, standards and products, on a pub-by-pub basis.”
