Manager Marion Cooney and her staff had every reason to celebrate at the Lincoln Best Bar None awards.
Her pub, The Square Sail, located on the waterfront at Brayford Pool, in the city, scooped the Best Bar Category Winner 2009 award.
Lincoln MP Gillian Merron presented Marion with the award at the ceremony.
The Square Sail was selected as the winner in its category – ahead of 40 other bars in the area.
The annual competition, now in its second year, is based on several criteria, including safety, training and responsible drinking policies.
Marion and her staff work closely with the police and local authorities: they operate Challenge 21 and Challenge 30 initiatives and have a zero tolerance policy, in terms of potential troublemakers.
As well as managing The Square Sail, Marion (having been at the pub since it opened in August 2003) is on the committee of the Brayford Business Forum and is the only representative from the pub industry on the Café Bar Licensing Committee, as well as vice-chair of the local pubwatch scheme. All of the roles are voluntary.
She said: “It is a fantastic achievement for everyone at the pub and a great tribute to all of the hard work of the staff.
“I would like to thank all of them for their outstanding work, while paying special tribute to my deputy manager – Chris Jackson.”
Lincoln Business Improvement Group’s evening economy manager, Shaun Barnett, said: “There are three Wetherspoon pubs in the city, but what stood out about The Square Sail is the manner in which Marion has put her own stamp on the venue.”
