Wetherspoon has three million reasons to celebrate in its fund-raising for children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent.
Its staff and customers have now raised £3 million for the charity – and it aims to continue the good work by raising an additional £500,000 in the forthcoming year.
Wetherspoon began fund-raising for the charity (which eases the burden of childhood cancer on children, young people and their families) in 2002.
Since then, its pub staff have undertaken hundreds of individual fund-raising events, including head shaves, sports auctions, raffles, cycle rides and fun days, with great support from customers at Wetherspoon pubs across the UK.
In addition, Wetherspoon has staged its annual Kick for CLIC Sargent five-a-side football tournament; this, alone, has raised more than £800,000 since 2003. It also donates 10p from every spaghetti Bolognese meal served from its kids’ menu, with more than £100,000 raised to date.
J D Wetherspoon’s chairman, Tim Martin, and head office staff were congratulated for their efforts by former world featherweight boxing champion Barry McGuigan (both pictured, with Wetherspoon’s chief executive John Hutson), one of CLIC Sargent’s patrons, who presented the company with a special recognition award.
Wetherspoon’s head of corporate affairs Caroline Walters said: “This is a monumental achievement and one of which every member of Wetherspoon staff and our superb customers should be proud. "We are thrilled to have reached the £3-million mark and look forward to raising even more money for such a fantastic charity.”
CLIC Sargent’s chief executive, Lorraine Clifton, said: “We are delighted that Wetherspoon has reached the £3-million fund-raising target for CLIC Sargent. “This is an incredible achievement and a testament to the continuing passion and enthusiasm of Wetherspoon staff and customers who have been dedicated supporters of CLIC Sargent. “On behalf of all of the children and young people with cancer, and their families who have and will benefit from this support, I would like to extend our sincere thanks and congratulations on reaching such an impressive milestone.”
