The Punchbowl has been voted ‘pub of the season’, by members of the local York CAMRA Branch, and described as ‘an all-round good pub’.
Each quarter – autumn, winter, spring and summer – the branch chooses two pubs of the season, one for the town and one for the country.
The Punchbowl has been named as summer 2009 town winner, the first time that a Wetherspoon outlet has won the award in the York branch area.
The York CAMRA branch Web site said: “The award is fitting recognition for the improvements made over the last year by manager Mark Rinder and his enthusiastic team of bar staff.
“Mark wasted no time in contacting the branch, when he arrived in York, regularly sending us details of his guest beers, joining LocAle and coming to branch meetings.
“He has improved the choice and quality of real ale in the pub no end, as the recent beer festival proved.”
The pub’s manager, Mark Rinder, pictured left, receiving his award from Heather Barber of York CAMRA, with duty managers Ross Laidler and Tracy Lovett, added: “We are delighted with the award and thank York CAMRA for its support.”
