Wetherspoon’s support of the arts has continued in 2012 with the staging of contemporary opera, again.
The Opera House, in Royal Tunbridge Wells, hosted a matinée and evening performance of La Traviata, by The Merry Opera Company.
The modern-day version of the Verdi masterpiece is set in a burlesque club, above a bar in east London, where Alfredo falls for Violetta.
The company is currently on tour with the production, with 36 performances which started in February and end in July. The run also included almost a month at Upstairs at the Gatehouse, above The Gatehouse Wetherspoon pub in Highgate.
Zai Koder, The Merry Opera Company’s chairman of trustees, said: “Our adaptations are intended for those who love music and beautiful singing, but who may be intimidated by ‘high culture’.”
