Football fans at The Bishop Blaize came face to face with a Manchester United legend at a fundraising event.
Former United player Eric Cantona as in town, for the unveiling of a statue at Old Trafford, Manchester, of manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
Pub manager Ben Plunkett took the opportunity to invite Cantona to his pub, just yards from the Manchester United stadium, as part of their ‘Cantona week’ celebrations.
Ben had travelled to Paris the previous month, to film an interview with Cantona. The DVD was screened at The Bishop Blaize, at a special fundraising event hosted by United fan Pete Boyle, to mark the 20th anniversary of the French man’s signing for United.
Ben said: “We had 200 people packed in the pub to watch the film, Eric’s goals and highlights from his United career. A raffle and auction, with a signed Cantona shirt fetching £500, helped to raise £1,600 for CLIC Sargent.
“Eric spent 40 minutes signing autographs and posing for photographs with regulars, during the day, before the evening event. It was fantastic to have him here at the pub.”
