Three pub managers, in Bury and Rochdale, were invited onto the judging panel, for the SIBA North Region Beer Competition 2011.

Lisa Newton from The Art Picture House and Rob Burgess at The Robert Peel, both in Bury, as well as Chris Riley from The Regal Moon, in Rochdale, were asked to take part by SIBA (Society of Independent Brewers) and members of the Rochdale, Oldham and Bury Campaign for Real Ale branch.

The trio was asked to judge several heats, as well as the contest’s final, held at the Ramada Manchester Piccadilly hotel. They were among 30 judges, including licensees, brewers and CAMRA members.

The competition was part of the four-day Great Northern Beer Festival, which was open to the public and served a selection of ales from 65 hand-pulls at the event.

Lisa said: “There were several categories, including bitters, milds, speciality beers and bottled porters and stouts, with a scoring card to mark clarity, aroma, taste and after-taste, out of a possible 10 points.

“It was a fantastic day and was lovely to be recognised for our knowledge and support of real ale.”
