The number of Wetherspoon employees now graduated from Nottingham Trent University, with an Advanced Diploma in Leisure Retail Management (Licensed Retail), has reached 54.
In addition, nine of the company’s employees have gained a BA (Hons) degree in Leisure Retail Management.
Both qualifications, awarded by Nottingham Trent University, are unique to J D Wetherspoon.
The advanced diploma, designed by Wetherspoon (in conjunction with the university), is aimed at improving people and business management skills.
Its modules are leadership and motivation, profitable drinks retailing, business development, financial awareness, managing loyalty and unlocking people’s potential.
Wetherspoon’s training development manager, Katie Arrigon, said: “The company is committed to offering its staff the opportunity to study and develop their skills at the highest level.
“The aim of the diploma programme is to develop the ‘thinking manager’, able to step back and reflect on the issues which he/she has learned, as well as using real pub experience, in order to find better and more effective ways of managing in the future.”
The key to the diploma is the assessment process, in which students have to write a detailed business plan, drawing on themes from all of the taught elements.
The business plan is reviewed by the university, with managers attending an assessed interview all about it.
A further 100 managers are studying for the advanced diploma, while 12 managers are studying for the BA (Hons) degree, alongside their current role.
