Essex to Istanbul Cycle Ride to Help Children with Cancer

Essex to Istanbul Cycle Ride to Help Children with Cancer
Article date: 02 Jun 2010

This summer two friends from Braintree will be taking on an impressive pedal-powered challenge across Europe, to raise money for CLIC Sargent.
J D Wetherspoon’s Kitchen Assistant Linton Nightingale and Environmental Consultant, and Wetherspoon customer, James Keable, both aged 26, are pumping up their tyres in readiness for a 10-week cycle challenge to Turkey.

The adventurous pair will be saddling up and setting off from the Picture Palace pub in Braintree on 30 June to make their way to Harwich to board a ferry to Holland.  The daring duo then aim to cover between 400 and 500km a week as they cycle their way through Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria before reaching their final stop in Istanbul.

Linton said: “This is an immense physical challenge and given the terrain we will face at certain points of our journey it will be a race against time to make our return flight on 9 September!  But we’re both raring to go and feeling very lucky to be doing something so exhilarating for such a worthy cause.”
J D Wetherspoon has supported CLIC Sargent since 2002 and is now its longest standing corporate partnership, having recently celebrated raising a remarkable £3.5 million for the children’s cancer charity.  Linton and James will be donating 80% of the funds they raise to CLIC Sargent and 20% to FARA – a charity that helps children in Romania which the pair will visit en route.

CLIC Sargent’s Corporate Account Manager, Amanda Chatterton said: “This is the latest in a long line of J D Wetherspoon’s fundraising activities and once again, the staff and customers have shown extraordinary energy and commitment to helping families affected by childhood cancer.  We wish Linton and James the best of luck and hope that it will be smooth-cycling all the way to Istanbul!”
