The Broken Bridge, in Pontefract, has won the Pontefract Civic Society Heritage Award. The award promotes the standard of design in new and refurbished buildings.

Wetherspoon opened the pub in June 2010, on the site of a disused retail unit, following a £1.2-million development project.

The pub’s manager, Andy Haith, is pictured receiving the award from Pontefract Civic Society’s chair Peter Cookson.

The panel’s members stated that ‘the interior has lots of interesting items depicting Pontefract’s rich heritage and should be seen as a place for tourists to visit and relax’.

Wetherspoon was also praised for ‘a good combination of uses, more than just a pub offering café culture, restaurant and coffee house, as well as for its excellent name choice and pictorial sign’
