Wetherspoon has opened 12 pubs and created 350 full- and part-time jobs, since it announced (December 2009) that it was to open 250 pubs in the next five years.
Among the pubs to have opened are The Green Ginger (Torquay), The Looking Glass (Warrington), The Granite City (at Aberdeen airport) and The Bear (Maidenhead).
The jobs have been a mix of management positions and staff working in the kitchen and behind the bar.
At present, Wetherspoon employs more than 21,000 staff in its pubs across the UK, as well as its head office in Watford, Hertfordshire.
Wetherspoon’s head of personnel and training, Mandy Ferries, said: “We are undertaking a massive recruitment drive to fill 10,000 jobs in the next five years in the new pubs.
“Additionally, we are always recruiting for our existing pubs across the UK.
“The company has an unrivalled reputation for the manner in which it trains its staff and its high staff retention levels. “There is great scope to advance your career at Wetherspoon, evident throughout the company, with numerous area managers having first worked as a pub manager and, in a similar vein, pub managers who joined the company as a member of bar staff.”
In order to support the recruitment drive and attract the best candidates, Wetherspoon has launched a new recruitment Web site, to include video testimonials from current employees.
By the end of 2010, all candidates will be asked to apply online for all vacancies.
Mandy added: “We already receive more than 15,000 hits weekly on our recruitment Web site; the new site will improve the candidate experience, as well as provide candidates with some real-life examples of what it is like to work for Wetherspoon.”
