A Monday-evening chess group has made the Wetherspoon pubs of Devon their home.

Known as ‘Wetherspoon’s Wood Pushers’, the small group of friends meets weekly, often frequenting The White Ball Inn (Tiverton), The Powder Monkey (Exmouth), The General Sir Redvers Buller (Crediton) and George’s Meeting House (Exeter).

Formed by brothers Obie and Kim Ebanks (pictured left), in the summer of 2010, the troupe’s members met at one another’s houses for the first few weeks, before adopting Wetherspoon as their ‘home’.

They were unanimous in explaining why they chose to meet only at Wetherspoon pubs, saying that it was ‘the irresistible combination of the warm welcome of a Wetherspoon outlet, coupled with good-quality food and drink,
at a price which all could afford’.
