Ninety Wetherspoon employees have graduated with an advanced diploma or degree in leisure management.

The qualification, now in its fifth year, was awarded by Nottingham Trent University. The course, designed by Wetherspoon (in conjunction with the university), is aimed at improving pub managers’ people-management and business-management skills.

Of the 90 graduates, 78 obtained the advanced diploma in leisure retail management, while 12 gained a BA honours degree.

Two of the degree graduates graduated with a first-class honours degree – the first time any Wetherspoon student has achieved this class of degree.

The courses undertaken by the pub managers and head-office staff include ‘business development’, ‘financial awareness’, ‘leadership and motivation’, ‘managing legally’, ‘profitable drinks retailing’ and ‘unlocking people potential’.

Wetherspoon’s head of personnel and training, Mandy Ferries, said: “The company is committed to offering its staff the opportunity to study and develop their skills at the highest level. We are proud of all of the graduates and their achievements.”

Following the graduation ceremony, the graduates and their families enjoyed a champagne reception at Lloyds No.1 Bar in Nottingham.
