Abbot Ale Title

Abbot Ale St George's Day

Celebrate St George's Day at J D Wetherspoon, with a pint of Abbot Ale.

On 23 April, pub-goers across England will be raising their glasses to St George, the patron saint of England. Greene King will be joining these celebrations with its own national treasure - Abbot Ale.

Abbot Ale has, for a long time, stood for the pinnacle of brewing excellence. Greene King hopes that pubs and pub-goers across England will join with Abbot Ale in celebrating St George's day, by raising their pints with style.

Abbot Ale

In fact, in the pub calendar, England's national day is now the third-busiest day of the year!

St George lived in the third century and was renowned for his bravery in his protests against the Romans' persecution of the Christians. It was on 23 April 303 that St George was beheaded for his heroic beliefs and refusal to give up his Christian faith. So it was that St George was declared patron saint of England, where his ideals of honour and gallantry are still celebrated by the nation today annually on 23 April.

Abbot Ale's own heritage traces back to medieval times, when the monks of Bury St Edmundbury, in Suffolk, brewed ale for the abbot, a fact chronicled in the 1086 Domesday Book. It is from this heritage that Abbot Ale takes its name, making it a truly English and nationally revered ale.

In brewing Abbot Ale today, the time-honoured techniques remain astonishingly unchanged from those used by the medieval monks of the 14th century. It is thanks to this that Abbot Ale has become a truly English institution.

Abbot Ale

The care and skill of the Greene King master brewer, the dedication of the bar staff to serving a quality pint and the attentiveness of the real-ale drinker (to the rich taste and aroma of the beer) demonstrate why Abbot continues to be celebrated as synonymous with England and the great British pub.

Abbot Ale, brewed for quality of the highest order, demonstrates brewing perfection which makes Abbot the English beer with which to celebrate St George's Day.

Abbot is a smooth and mature ale, deep in flavour and aroma. On the palate, it is rich in malt and ripe fruit, with a superb hop balance, followed by an intense bittersweet finish. These dark and delicious characteristics develop as a result of an unusually long fermentation process, brewed for longer for a distinctive full flavour which leads Abbot drinkers to associate the brew with 'quality' and 'craftsmanship'* and is why it outperforms all other premium ales in taste trials**.
